ELY MINNESOTA LAKE RESORTS – RIVER POINT RESORT
Located in the heart of the Superior National Forest, the “Naturally Superior™” location of River Point Resort & Outfitting Co. is on an private wilderness peninsula with a mile of secluded shoreline. This amazing location deep within the wooded beauty and tranquil waters of Birch Lake and the South Kawishiwi River is only 8.5 miles, or about 15 minutes from downtown Ely.
River Point Road is a meandering, private drive into River Point Resort off of state highway #1, providing a wonderful “buffer” from all things “unnatural”. As you drive down River Point Road your mind will begin to declutter, your spirit will begin to be lifted and your sense of anticipation will be heightened. As your journey continues you may even be “greeted” by resident deer who will welcome you to our little slice of paradise.
BOUNDARY WATERS CANOE AREA WILDERNESS
River Point is the only Ely, Minnesota resort and canoe outfitter located on the northern most private half of beautiful Birch Lake with direct water access to the Boundary Waters and is surrounded by over a million acres of wilderness. Guests can experience the Boundary Waters right from their doorstep for fantastic day and overnight canoe trips. River Point provides daily shuttle service to various entry points into the BWCA for day guided or self-guided fishing excursions, photography, wildlife viewing, and just plain enjoyment! BEAUTIFUL BIRCH LAKE – GREAT FISHING
Birch Lake is approximately 7000+ acres and 20 miles long. Birch is the largest Ely-area lake, and 90% of its wilderness shoreline is remarkably undeveloped and “natural.” There is no other lake in the Ely area outside of the protected Boundary Waters Canoe Area with this amount of true wilderness shoreline, yet any size boat with motor is allowed on stunning Birch Lake.
Less shoreline development means more wilderness seclusion for you at this Ely resort. Boaters and fisher people will enjoy the privacy of a fish fry on an island, or “time to explore” anywhere on the lake. Canoeists who desire to camp overnight will find the same quiet and solitude as they would in the BWCA. We say, “If you see another boat or two on Birch in an hour, we call that busy!” Check out the Resort & Birch Lake Maps at More>>
Fishing doesn’t get any better. Birch Lake was ranked the #2 walleye lake in Minnesota in a recent survey by the DNR. An average of 14.2 walleyes were caught per gill net in the most recent population survey. Other predominant species are northern pike, slab crappies, tasty bluegills, and feisty smallmouth bass. WILDLIFE ABOUNDS – NATURAL BEAUTY
Clean, fresh air, shining stars and dancing northern lights. Natural beauty: glacial cliffs, pines, birch, rapids, and abundant wildlife — moose, deer, eagles, loons, many species of birds and more. River Point’ private mile long peninsula is secluded, quiet, and is a safe haven for wildlife and birds. One of the most popular birding spots in northeastern Minnesota is the Birch Lake Dam area and River Point is directly adjacent to this prime birding area. Avid birders can also observe many species of birds, both common and hard-to-find right on River Point’s land.
Don’t be surprised to see several white tail deer during your stay. They enjoy feeding on the sweet grasses lining the 1.3 mile lovely River Point Road that leads into River Point Resort as it offers your first taste of the peace and serenity that awaits you on your getaway. The deer also can be spotted at various sundeck areas as they feel quite safe in this sanctuary area.
Also, enjoy the antics of the many squirrels and chipmunks that scamper around and about along with the mighty Bald Eagles that perch on top of the tallest white pine trees watching over everything below. Eagles can also be seen floating up and around in the sky above River Point. Minnesota’s State Bird is the Loon. And, the Loon captures the true essence of the North Country with their unique and haunting calls both day and evening. Springtime brings the birth of baby loons and it is incredible to watch them on top the mother loons backs as she glide along the waters of Birch lake and the South Kawishiwi River.
